Mexico bounces back from Wilma

29 Mar 2006

Mexico has been commended for its work to rebuild after the devastation caused by Hurricane Wilma last year.

Head of the UN World Tourism Organisation Francesco Frangialli visited the areas affected around the tourist destination of Cancun and commented that the work should act as a blueprint for other areas hit by disasters.

He said: 'Getting these resorts back into action so quickly after such a destructive hurricane is a credit to the combined efforts of both public and private sectors in Mexico.

'The speed and efficiency shown in the recuperation of these resorts is worthy of being a role model to be followed by other destinations around the world.'

Around Cancun all major roads have been reopened, along with archaeological sites, and the airport, although undergoing refurbishment, is fully open for scheduled and charter flights.

Latest tourism data show of the 53,000 hotel beds available 83 per cent on average are taken, as people return to the resort, and water, electricity and phone services are working in all hotels.
