More California dreaming

29 Mar 2006

Increasing numbers of tourists are heading to the state of California, according to new figures.

A report, conducted by Dean Runyan Associates, found that visitor spending was up 7.6 per cent last year on 2004 at $88.1 billion, the third consecutive year of growth.

A large proportion of tourism comes from domestic travellers, with 29.8 million air passenger arrivals from other US airports last year, up 2.6 per cent on 2004.

'California is one of the world's premier destinations,' said the California Travel and Tourism Commission executive director Caroline Beteta.

'These numbers attest to the success of the travel industry and its significant impacts on California,' she added.

Tourism is thought to provide around 911,800 jobs in the state, up over five per cent on 2004.

Among its many attractions, California houses Hollywood, San Francisco, hundreds of miles of beaches and Disneyland.
