Record numbers of Brits travel to Canada

31 Mar 2006

Over 900,000 British travellers headed to Canada last year, official figures show.

The record level of Britons heading to Canada was down to increased air capacity and low cost scheduled airlines.

Maggie Davison, managing director of the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC), said: 'These numbers serve to strengthen the position of the UK as the second largest market to Canada after the U.S. The UK arrivals represent a 9.9 per cent increase on 2004.

'December visitation alone from the UK was up 14.5 per cent.'

She added that the popularity of the country had increased because Canada is considered as a safe destination together with the diverse scenery and its mix of French and American cultures.

The CTC hopes that in 2006 the number of UK visitors to Canada will be over the million mark.
