Air travel at its cheapest
2 May 2006
The cost of a short-haul plane ticket has fallen by 43 per cent over the last decade.
Data released by the Department for Transport under the Freedom of Information Act show the average short-haul leisure air ticket has fallen in price from £110 to £63.
Business travellers have also seen similar falls as the average European ticket fell in price by 49 per cent to £113.
Those flying on business were also found to be switching to low cost economy airlines to bring down travelling costs.
The figures show more people have flown to Europe as the prices tumble. In 1994, 36m people took to the skies to go to Europe, but by 2004 this had increased to 65m.
The high number of air travellers came although fuel prices have been rising and many people chose not to fly after the terrorist attacks on the US in 2001.
