Islamabad to have new airport

2 May 2006

Work will begin later this year on Islamabad's new international airport.

The £160m project will see Pakistan's capital served by a futuristic new airport, as it leaves its current location that it shares with a military base.

Authorities say the airport will open in three years and will be among the world's best.

Pervez Nawaz, director general of Pakistan's civil aviation authority, said: 'The design of the new Islamabad airport will be finalised by mid-May while construction work is expected to commence by the end of the year.

'The new Islamabad international airport will have the best international standards.'

The coastal town of Gwadar is set to receive a new airport and the Pakistani civil aviation authority also announced that Multan International Airport, in the region of Punjab, will undergo a modernisation programme.

The investment is part of Pakistan's attempt to bring more tourists to the country.
