World's largest hotel unveiled

2 May 2006

Dubai is to be the home of the world's largest hotel.

The Asia Asia Hotel will have 6,500 rooms and will form part of the £15 billion Bawadi development that will include 31 hotels.

The first part of the development including the Asia Asia Hotel - is set to open in 2010 with the final phases coming together four years later.

The completed Bawadi project will offer 29,000 rooms in total - meaning it would take 79 years to spend the night in each room. Developers hope the Bawadi will attract 3.3m travellers each year.

Last year six million tourists headed to Dubai, including 700,000 Brits, attracted by luxury hotels and shopping, and good weather. A further 100,000 Britons are thought to work in the Persian Gulf state.

The world's largest hotel follows a series of other world records for Dubai including the biggest shopping mall, the largest man-made harbour, the first seven-star hotel and the biggest indoor ski slope.
