Belfast named Best
22 May 2006
Belfast City Airport was officially renamed in honour of George Best today (22 May).
On what would have been the footballer's 60th birthday, members of the Best family and his footballing colleagues were joined by fans at the unveiling of a new sign for the airport.
The airport will now be known as the George Best Belfast City Airport.
Brian Ambrose, Belfast City Airport chief executive, explained the decision to change the name of the airport was made after the Best family contacted the airport stating it would be the best memorial for the former Northern Ireland and Manchester United player.
He said: 'We believe that re-naming the airport after George is a fitting and permanent tribute to his footballing brilliance.
'George Best was the finest footballer Northern Ireland has ever produced and one of the greatest footballers to grace the world stage and a man who the public had great affection for.'
