Vienna hosts $1m star charity ball
22 May 2006
Actresses Sharon Stone and Catherine Deneuve and supermodel Naomi Campbell were among the stars at this year's Life Ball in Vienna.
The 14th annual fundraising ball helped to raise around $1.3m (£0.7m) for people living with HIV and Aids and showed a wilder side to the usually reserved Austrian capital.
The venue for the ball that took place on 20 May was the historic Vienna City Hall and the square in front of it was transformed into a fashion show catwalk show, with a runway in the shape of a red ribbon.
Far from the traditional Viennese balls, guests at the Life Ball took advantage of the occasion to dress up as wildly as possible with leather costumes and outlandish hair pieces being de rigueur.
Vienna will continue to rock next month with the Danube Island Festival.
From 23 to 25 June, over 3m visitors will come to Europe's biggest free music festival to see top international acts, including DJs, hip-hop artists and rock and pop bands.
