23 May 2006

bmi has launched a new service to Saudi Arabia.

The airline will fly three times a week to the city of Jeddah from Heathrow, following the success of its route to Riyadh.

Nigel Turner, bmi chief executive, said: 'The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Britain have close trading relationships, and we are delighted to be able to serve the travelling needs of Britons and Saudis.'

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia's second city, as well as offering much to explore in itself and nearby resorts on the Red Sea, is often used as a gateway for the cultural and religious centres of Mecca and Medina although both sites are not open to non-Muslims.

The city of Jeddah is home is a historic centre with traditional multi-storey buildings and old merchant houses - and a more vibrant business district.

Beach resorts offer good weather throughout most of the year and diving on the coral reefs.
