International poetry please

25 May 2006

This June sees one of the world's most important poetry festivals taking place in Rotterdam.

The 37th Poetry International Festival takes place from 17 to 23 June.

The Rotterdam City Theatre - Rotterdamse Schouwburg plays host to a series of performances from poets from around the world and Ireland's Nobel Prize-winning poet Seamus Heaney is among this year's line up, which includes poets from Croatia, Portugal, China, Uganda and South Africa.

One of the many events that should bring poetry lovers from around the world together will be the Chinese Whispers project.

A poem by the Dutch poet Hans Verhagen will be translated from one language to the next and finally back into Dutch, before all will be performed at the final show.

Modern forms of poetry will be embraced with the Slampionship where poetry and rap competitions meet.

June also sees Rotterdam relaxing with a taste of the Caribbean. The Strand Aan De Maas free festival brings music, DJs and food to the Dutch city through June and into July.
