Brits book World Cup escape
1 Jun 2006
Twelve per cent of Britons are planning to book a holiday to getaway from the World Cup, according to a new survey.
With the World Cup due to kick off on 9 June and last until 9 July with 56 matches many people - mostly women - are aiming to escape the blanket coverage of the tournament by heading on holiday.
An early exit for England from the competition could also see many heading abroad to escape the disappointment, with 7% of Brits choosing to delay booking until England are knocked out.
Joanne Field, of American Express, which was behind the survey, said: 'If England gets knocked out of the World Cup we are expecting a rush of last minute bookings.'
The poll also showed how football will be splitting the country over the next month, with 18% aiming to avoid television completely during the tournament and 28% planning to catch as many games as possible, be it England v Sweden or Iran v Angola.
