Celebrations as Medieval manor house tops visitor poll

Visitors are flocking to an attraction they have voted the most enjoyable historic day out in Lincolnshire in the East of England this year.

Gainsborough Old Hall in Lincolnshire, a warm red brick manor house over 500 years old, is coming alive with minstrels, jesters, guides, costume and history, finding thousands of new enthusiasts among pupils and visitors.

Only two years ago, the hall was the subject of a major conservation plan, which called on the local council, residents, societies and owners English Heritage to give the attraction a new lease of life.

Bookings, individual and educational visits have all exceeded expectations so far, with a programme of events attracting well over 28,000 people to the hall last year and thousands of school parties.

Banquets in the great hall are popular both on children's days and with adults. Next on the summer calendar to celebrate the visit of Queen Elizabeth I and Lord Leicester - is a four-course meal with Tudor entertainment.
