Shades, camera...passport?
19 Jun 2006
If you're planning to travel abroad from the UK this summer, check your passport now and avoid disappointment at the airport, says the Identity and Passport Service (IPS).
Research carried out for the IPS revealed that leaving checks until the last minute could seriously damage your holiday.
The 17% who start looking for their passport the day before they go away look positively well-prepared compared to the 15% who remember the document a few hours before departure; the 7% who admit they panic when they can't find it with moments to spare; and the 3% who actually forget it.
If you discover that your passport expires in the middle of your holiday, you may also have to pay £48 more for fast-track renewal in person, during the busiest time of the year, if you cannot guarantee return by the standard postal method.
Those planning a trip to the USA should also remember that anyone without a machine-readable passport, including children listed on a parent's passport, must still obtain a visa to enter the country.
Those who sort out all these pitfalls well in advance, however, should be in for a much more relaxing time.
