Depp, Knightley and Bloom shiver their timbers in Dominica

22 Jun 2006

With the release of Pirates of the Caribbean II, the Caribbean island Dominica is set to attract world's attention.

The film starring Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom was partly filmed on Dominica, chosen in part for its natural resources, with waterfalls hidden in the island's forests and unspoilt coastlines and beaches.

During filming the rivers and coast of the island saw the arrival of not just the stars, but also replicas of 16th century pirate ships.

Dominica, which should not be confused with the Dominican Republic, also has its fair share of pirate heritage.

According to legend, 3m Spanish pesos were hidden somewhere on the island by pirates, the spoils from a raid on the Spanish fleet in 1567 by some maritime ne'er-do-wells.

The spotlight on Dominica is also not set to fade as the film crew were on the island to make two sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean, with the third film set to be released next year.
