Love and wine in France

23 Jun 2006

The French town of Marlenheim each year celebrates a love story.

Located in the Alsace, the town re-enacts the 18th story of Fritz on 14 and 15 August, as he turns his back on the life as a confirmed bachelor and falls in love with a young village girl.

Traditional costumes are donned by locals for Le Mariage de l'Ami Fritz and a street parade with horse-drawn carts culminates with the re-enactment of the couple's wedding ceremony.

Le Mariage de l'Ami Fritz is now in its 34th year and has grown into a folk festival with the concerts of local traditional music being almost as important the histrionics.

The two days of romantic celebration are helped along by bottles of the local wines, most notably the Rouge de Marlenheim.

For wine lovers Marlenheim is worth visiting as it is the first stop on the Alsace wine route, which takes visitors through the region's main vineyards.
