Biometric baggage control
28 Jun 2006
Fingerprint checks at boarding gates are to be introduced in Sweden.
Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) is to bring in fingerprint readers at check-in and boarding gates to ensure the person handing in luggage is the same one boarding the plane.
Peter Sderlund, vice president of product concepts at SAS, said: 'By using biometrics we can make travelling more convenient for our passengers.
'The only requirement at boarding is the passenger's finger - no further ID-document is needed.'
At the check-in, passengers' fingerprints will be taken electronically and temporarily stored. Before boarding, a person's fingerprint will be taken again and checked against the first.
The checks will first be brought in on domestic flights in Sweden, meeting tightened security requirements from the country's civil aviation administration that demand guarantees that the person checking in the baggage on an airline is also on the plane.
However, the technology is expected to be spread to SAS international flights and on other airlines.
