Railing around Europe

28 Jun 2006

Trains are the preferred method of transport for Americans visiting Europe.

A poll of US travellers showed only 16% would opt for a car trip around the continent and 13% would prefer to fly.

In total, 70% said their preferred method of seeing Europe would be by train, the Menlo Consulting Group Travel Styles USA research found.

Sarita Skidmore, president of Menlo Consulting Group, said: "The stereotype that travelling Europe by rail is for students and backpackers is outdated.

"Our research shows that more than half of American train travellers in Europe are age 50 or older and come from upper income areas."

"With sleek new high-speed trains crisscrossing the continent, train travel in Europe is no longer just for backpackers," he added.

The most common tickets booked for rail trips by Americans were luxury packages, chosen by two thirds.
