Spain named best gay holiday destination
28 Jun 2006
Spain has picked up the prize for destination of the year at the 13th annual PlanetOut Travel Awards.
The awards, recognising the best in gay and lesbian travel during the past year, picked Spain as the best country to head to and Buenos Aires as the best city.
Ed Salvato, PlanetOut travel editor, said: 'There might as well be a map of Spain next to the definition of "progressive society" in the dictionary.
'With a headstrong leap into modernity, Spain has doffed its Franco past and embraced an inclusive social policy such as legalised same-sex marriage, hedonistic nightlife, cutting-edge cuisine and fast-moving energy amid balconies and Iberian charm.'
The best destination in the US was named as New York and the best gay resort town was Provincetown, located on the tip of Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
American Airlines was named as the best airline and the best gay event of the year was the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras, which takes place in March.
