Britain top holiday spot for Britons

29 Jun 2006

Staying in Britain is the most popular holiday option for Brits, a new survey has found.

A YouGov poll revealed 68% of people have had a holiday in the UK in the last two years.

This compares with 57% who have headed to Europe and 17% who have flown off to North America.

Just 6% have travelled to Africa or Asia, 4% to Australasia and 3% to South America.

'Whilst we weren't surprised that Britons like to holiday here in the UK, we were intrigued to note that it was the number one destination in every demographic, in all ages, income levels, genders and regions,' said Tony Shawcross, senior managing consultant at MasterCard Advisors, which commissioned the survey.

However, the survey shows that people would like to be more adventurous in their choice of destinations and leave British beaches behind them.

In total 28% of people polled said they wanted to travel further afield, including 16% of those over the age of 50.
