Canada to open biggest skate park

29 Jun 2006

Winnipeg is set to become a Mecca for skateboarders across the globe with the opening of Canada's biggest skate park.

The Plaza at The Forks covers 44,000 square feet, including a central plaza featuring terrain inspired by the best skating spots in San Francisco, Barcelona and Japan with a combination of various stair sets, banks, rails and ledges.

The park also features a bowl complex, resembling a drained swimming pool, with curved walls 17-ft high at their highest and a series of smaller undulations.

However, areas have been designed for inline skaters, skateboarders and BMX riders of all abilities and a Skate Patrol has also been established to ensure everyone gets on well and provide advice and training for those who need it.

The park was made possible after a £1m donation from the Burns Family Foundation, a local charity.

Paul Jordan, the Forks chief operating officer, said: 'We set out to make this the best park of its kind and we have, in our eyes, done just that.

'The success of this project is really down to the vision of the Burns Family Foundation who came to us with the project, told us it had to be the greatest and then funded it to the level we needed to make it just that.'
