Go nuts in Corsica

29 Jun 2006

In Corsica the Foire de l'Amandier, or Almond Fair, is more than just celebrating a nut.

On 5 and 6 August, the village of Aregno on the north coast of Corsica holds a festival of arts, crafts and music all in honour of the almond.

Thousands of people head to the village for the fair, which is also a focus for local growers to show off their produce to potential buyers.

Perhaps the greatest attraction is the cookery contest and subsequent tastings, where visitors can learn a few new recipes for almonds.

A full selection of local cuisine and wine will also be on offer for those who are not partial to almonds.

Aregno, set in the countryside but overlooking the Mediterranean and within site of the mountains, is a typical Corsican village with a few dozen red-roofed houses, two churches and a central square which is the focus for village life and the fair.
