30 Jun 2006

Tourism is set to return to Lebanon, a new study has found.

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) predicts that tourism in Lebanon could more than double over the next ten years, earning the country £4.8 billion a year by 2016.

Lebanese tourism authorities predict that 1.6 million tourists will head to the country this year and the five star hotels of Beirut and the mountains report they are almost three quarters full.

Before the country's civil war Lebanon, located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea was a popular tourist destination.

The principle areas for tourism the mountains, the capital Beirut and Tripoli have seen increased investment in hotels and facilities in recent years.

The country's archaeological treasures ranging form Roman towns to an abbey established by crusaders have also started to gear up to welcome visitors.
