Scots' sausages mistaken for bomb

3 Jul 2006

A 75-year-old Scottish woman's Lorne sausage has been mistaken at an airport for a bomb.

Pensioner Cindy McIntyre was stopped after her tartan shopping trolley was X-rayed at Southampton Airport and the authorities mistook the square sausage for semtex and her phone charger for a detonator.

The grandmother told the Daily Record: 'I think they thought I could be a terrorist.

'It's a lot of nonsense. I'm in the army all right... the Salvation Army.'

The airport authorities defended their actions saying security was the highest priority.

It is not the first time a Lorne sausage has caused a security scare.

Last week Taggart and Pirates of the Caribbean star Alex Norton was stopped at Glasgow airport when his sausage caused a panic.

It too was mistaken for an explosive and the actor had to empty his case.

A Glasgow Airport spokesman said: 'We regularly see expats trying to leave Scotland with everything from Scotch pies, plain bread, cans of Irn-Bru, black pudding and Lorne sausage.

'If someone is travelling to London, there is no reason why they can't take the goods. If, however, as appears to have happened in this case, security staff were not sure what was in a package, we would ask them to open it.'
