Philippine tourism booms

In the first five months of the year tourist numbers to the Philippines shot up by 11.8%.
So far this year foreign visitors to the Philippines have numbered 1.1m and in 2005 there were 2.6m, with visitors mostly coming from South Korea, Taiwan and Japan, a study by the University of Asia and the Pacific has found.
Bernardo Villegas, vice president of the university, explained how the growth in visitors from north-east Asia was proof the Philippines is an affordable holiday destination.
'Foreign visitors are attracted by the country's natural beauty, in addition to the talents of its people,' he added.
The move to attract more people to the Philippines is part of the nation's government's plan to boost the economy.
President of the Philippines Gloria Arroyo said: 'We hope tourism and retirees will be our next growth engine to ensure a better economic future for the Philippines.'
One of the highlights of the country is the island of Bohol, which offers white sandy beaches, thick rain forests in the Chocolate Hills and scuba diving, along with a wide selection of historical and cultural sites.
