The safe landing of the space shuttle Discovery today (17 July) is encouraging many tourists to plan a holiday in time to catch a rocket take off.
August this year sees two launches planed from Cape Canaveral in Florida: an Atlas V rocket on 1 August and Space Shuttle Atlantis on 28 August.
The Atlas V rocket will carry the Stereo satellite on a two-year mission on the sun, while Atlantis will take a crew of six astronauts to the International Space Station.
The Kennedy Space Centre is open throughout the year and during a launch a special public viewing area is opened up offering the best views of a take off.
However, as the launch of a shuttle is a highly technical operation, a large number of variables - from the weather to the shuttle itself - can delay a launch even in the final seconds of the countdown.
Attractions at the Kennedy Space Centre when no launch is planned include the chance to meet an astronaut, two IMAX cinemas, a whole range of space hardware including a Saturn V rocket and a live theatre show that introduces Professor Pruvitt on his Mad Mission to Mars.
