Parking controls put in place around Gatwick

19 Jul 2006

New parking controls have been established around Gatwick airport.

Controlled parking zones are to be set up in residential areas around the airport to stop commuters and holidaymakers using the streets to avoid paying for airport parking.

Horley town councillor Bernard Kendall explained to ic surreyonline why the decision was long overdue.

He said: 'Most residents certainly should welcome it - they've been banging on about it for a long time.

'Holidaymakers would park in some of the roads for two or three weeks.'

Dorothy Ross-Tomlin, county councillor for Horley East, told This Is Hertfordshire: 'I hope this will make for a much quieter life for residents in the area. Their lives have been plagued over the years by inconsiderate parking, especially by holidaymakers.'

The move by some holidaymakers to park in residential areas is understandable especially as a recent investigation by the Sunday Mirror showed in some cases parking was more expensive than flights.
