Zanzibar enjoys tourism boom

Visitor numbers to the islands of Zanzibar have shot up by 27% in the last 12 months.
Figures from Zanzibar tourism ministry show 125,443 tourists headed to the archipelago off Tanzania since June last year.
Britons made up 10% of all visitors that headed to the islands to enjoy it beaches and cultural mix that has been influenced by the African mainland, Portuguese settlers, Persians, Arabs and Indians over the centuries.
Some 40% of visitors came from Italy, with the rest from around the world with tourists most notably heading there from the US, Scandinavia, Canada and South Africa.
Since the fall in the export price of Zanzibar's main export cloves, the islands have focused more on tourism in recent years and the tourism minister Samia Suluhu Hassan said she expected the growth in visitor number to continue.
