Europe holidays at home

26 Jul 2006

Most people taking holidays in the EU stay in their own countries, new data from the European Commission reveal.

Across the 25 nations of the EU, 57% of holidays were in travellers' own countries.

However in the UK this pattern was reversed with only 41% of holidays in Britain and 59% in foreign climes.

The UK also bucked the trend in how it goes on holiday.

While across Europe 58% of holidays are taken by private car and 25% by air in the UK this stands at 37% of holidays by car and 51% by plane.

The figures also revealed that 28% of all European holidays are in the EU and 15% are outside.

In the UK, 16% of holidays were outside the EU and 42% in one of the other member states.

Over last summer UK holidaymakers spent almost 80m nights in hotels while Italians spent 126m nights in hotels and Spaniards 120m nights.
