UK holidaymakers spend £4.1bn before the airport

26 Jul 2006

British tourists spend on average £121 each on goods preparing for a holiday.

In total, this means UK holidaymakers are spending £4.1 billion to get ready for their annual break, according to a new poll.

The top priority for many travellers is to ensure their wardrobe is perfect for a holiday.

The survey showed that 78% of women and 59% of men buy new clothes before jetting off and 39% of all those heading away buy new swimwear.

In fact, new clothes was found to be a bigger priority than getting travel insurance which only 58% of men and 69% of women admitted to getting.

Other major sources of expenditure include toiletries, shoes, sunglasses and guide books.

Gary Fitton, of the Post Office, which carried out the research, said: 'People want to make sure they look their best and have fun on holiday, and for many this means a lot of preparation before they even board the flight spending that perhaps isn't always realised in the total cost of a holiday.'
