Vietnam invests in tourism

26 Jul 2006

Authorities in Vietnam have announced they are to invest almost £4m in developing tourism.

Money will go towards boosting the numbers of visitors in coastal regions of the country and the central highlands.

Over the first half of 2006, just over 1.8m international visitors went to Vietnam an increase of 7.2% and the Vietnam Administration of Tourism is aiming to keep visitor numbers growing and for a "highly developed" tourism industry to develop over the next five years.

In recent years tourism in the country has started to grow substantially with a series of luxury resorts springing up on the coast near the port of Hai Phong.

Other areas that will receive investment are the eco-tourist destination of Hoang Hoa and Unesco world heritage site Hoi An a small town which is a example of a South-East Asian trading port from 15th century.
