Stansted aims for flights to India

28 Jul 2006

Officials from Stansted airport are in talks with a number of airlines about starting flights to India.

Currently passengers wishing to fly to India from Stansted only have one option of an indirect flight with Turkish Airlines.

Current plans include a second runway, although planning permission is not expected to be applied for until next year, and the long-term target is for 76 million passengers by 2030.

A spokesman for BA Stansted said: 'India, China and Oman and other Asian countries are on the radar.'

However, he added that a number of factors were involved in allowing flights to destinations further afield.

'It will take a number of years to come into fruition but we are in regular talks with business leaders in those countries to gain support for new routes,' he added.

He said it is likely new routes would come into effect 'in advance of ten years'.
