Shanghai Disneyland starts construction
16 Aug 2006
Builders have started preparing the site for Shanghai Disney in a project that should see Mickey and co move into their second Chinese home by 2010.
Work to clear the way for the 4.25 square km first stage of the park in the Chuansha town in the Pudong New District of the city has begun, which should see it open in time for the World Expo.
According to the state-run China Securities Journal, the project is to ward off competition from domestic competitors who also want to build Chinese theme parks.
Japan already has a Disneyland, as does Hong Kong, but the $3.8 billion Shanghai Disneyland would be 3.7 times larger than its Cantonese rival.
Work has started quickly in China's economic and financial capital and Disney wants to ultimately expand the site into a giant 10 sq km in the second stage.
News comes as the original Disneyland in California celebrates over 50th years of pleasing adults and children alike, while Hong Kong Disney is getting ready for its first birthday next month.
