New York's oldest barman hits 90

24 Aug 2006

Hoy Wong has hit the headlines around the world with his 90th birthday making him New York's oldest barman.

During his 58-year career behind the bar, Mr Hoy has served the likes of Bob Hope, Dean Martin and Marilyn Monroe.

He said: 'Marilyn Monroe came in for lunch every Wednesday when she was in New York with second husband Arthur Miller.

'Always Beefeater Martini, dry. Never change.'

Other regulars have included Dorothy Parker and Judy Garland.

Mr Hoy described Garland as being 'very sad'

'She always had a cocktail glass in her hand,' he said.

The nonagenarian started his career in 1948 at the Freeman Chum bar but moved to the Algonquin Hotel in 1979. In the 27 years with his new employer his bosses claim he has never missed a day.

The Algonquin hit the headlines last year when it started serving a $10,000 cocktail.

The Martin on the Rock comes with such a high price tag as it is served with a diamond along with a mix of Belvedere vodka and Martini & Rossi vermouth.
