Qantas bans Dell

24 Aug 2006

Travellers heading on board Qantas flights with Dell computers are being asked to take out batteries.

The move has come as Dell ordered the recall of over 4m batteries as they posed the risk of overheating and causing fires.

Laptops can still be taken on board but they may not be used with the battery while they are plugged into an aircraft's power supply.

One Dell-carrying passenger Mitch Denny told the Sydney Morning Herald about his experience.

He said: 'They did stop me at the security gate where I was told I couldn't use my Dell laptop on the plane.

'I told them it wasn't one of the affected units but they said all Dell batteries had to be taped according to an agreement between Dell and Qantas.'

Qantas is believed to have now relaxed its restrictions and all Dell users are being asked to identify themselves to the cabin crew so they can be advised on how to use their laptops safely.
