Toilet break too long for pilot

1 Sep 2006

With 30 minutes before landing, passengers on a Canadian plane found out that the pilot was trapped outside the cockpit after a toilet break.

The 50 travellers on board the Air Canada Jazz flight from Ottawa to Winnipeg saw the pilot bang on the door for ten minutes trying to get himself into the cockpit, although he was able to communicate with the cockpit via an internal phone.

Eventually the crew had to remove the door from its hinges to allow the pilot to get to the controls so he could land the plane.

Passengers throughout the incident were described as being calm.

Manon Stewart, spokeswomen for the airline, said: 'The door malfunctioned. This is a very rare occurrence. To the best of our knowledge, it's the first time we've encountered this problem in-flight.'

She went on to explain that 'the safety and security of our passengers was never compromised', as the first officer was able to land the plane alone.
