India to open remote islands
5 Sep 2006
A total of 15 islands in the remote Andamans archipelago are to be developed as tourist destinations.
It is expected that the islands, located around 1,200km from the coast of India, will undergo a revamp in order to attract more visitors to the region.
However, the local tourist chief is adamant that the developments on all 50 sites will be eco-friendly, reports AFX News.
Andaman's tourism chief Dharam Pal explained: 'These sites have been selected so that environmentally sensitive hotels and beach resorts can be set up under our tourism plan.'
At present, just 36 out of around 500 islands are inhabited by residents and it is hoped that plans to increase tourism to the island will also bring benefits to those already living in the area.
The area was badly hit by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, with around 3,000 deaths and a further 5,500 missing. The disaster caused a significant drop in visitor numbers to the region, with the number of tourists falling from around 92,000 to just 20,000 per year.
