Lufthansa may expand to more regional airports

German airline Lufthansa has indicated that it is planning to increase the number of flights it operates from regional airports in the UK.
The company is considering operating new services from Cardiff, Bristol and Southampton and has reported that its business class travel arm is booming following improvements to its menus and services.
Lufthansa UK and Ireland general manager, Dieter Grotepass, told Travel Weekly that passenger growth from regional airports was rising steadily, indicating that demand existed for new services.
The airline has already increased the number of regional flights it operates for its winter 2006/07 schedule and has added a number of new routes over the past year.
According to the Lufthansa, passengers are opting to fly to and from regional airports in the UK rather than Heathrow following last month's terror alert after UK police foiled an attempt to use liquid explosives to blow up transatlantic passenger flights.
Lufthansa claims to have witnessed a 17% fall in business passengers in the week immediately following the security alert, but says that traffic through other facilities such as Birmingham International, Newcastle, Manchester and London City had increased steadily by around 10 to 12% since July.
