Star Alliance wins top prize for airline alliance

18 Sep 2006

Star Alliance has been voted the best airline alliance at this year's Business Traveller awards.

The global airline network won the prize, one of the industry's top honours, following a poll of readers of Business Traveller UK between April and June 2006.

Star Alliance commercial vice president, Philip Saunders, collected the award in London and welcomed the honour, which is voted for by business travellers.

'What makes this award special is the fact that the voters are bona-fide travellers, hence people who actually make use of our products and thus is testimony to the fact that we deliver the alliance customer promise consistently across our global network,' he said.

Established in 1997, the Star Alliance network has 18 member carriers, including Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Spanair, THAI and United.

Members of the alliance schedule more that 16,000 flights a day to 841 destinations worldwide and it has won a number of awards including Best Airline Alliance from Business Traveller Magazine in 2003 and from Skytrax in 2003 and 2005.

Both Air China and Shanghai Airlines are recently reported to have signalled their intentions to join Star Alliance, as the Chinese travel and tourism market continues to boom.
