18 Sep 2006

The US state of Hawaii has been named as the best winter destination in the world by UK holidaymakers.

The islands topped a poll by Expedia.co.uk of the top destinations for winter travellers, closely followed by the Czech city of Prague, famous for its charming Christmas markets.

Third in the survey was the beautiful Algarve region of southern Portugal, which enjoys pleasant weather all year round, followed by the Irish capital Dublin at number 4 and the tiny paradise islands of Mauritius.

Hawaii also appeared on a recent list of the top 10 destinations for Expedia customers over the past ten years. The state is located in the Pacific Ocean and offers blue skies, crystal sea, tropical valleys and stunning mountains.

The Aloha State has been a hit with visitors for decades, providing a laidback welcome, a rich culture and excellent tourist amenities, including an array of sporting facilities such as golf courses, diving and surf schools. The archipelago has a total of six islands, from lively Waikiki beach to quiet Kauai.

The list of winter tourist destinations for 2006, based on bookings and predictions, is a combination of city breaks and summer sun, with New York, Hong Kong, the tiny mountain state of Andorra and Dubai also featuring in the top 10.
