Qantas to develop world first in flight mobile calls

20 Sep 2006

Qantas is aiming to be the first airline in the world to offer inflight mobile phone services.

Next year the airline will run a three-month trial of a system on one of its Boeing 767 aircraft after teaming up with a series of technology firms.

Qantas senior executive vice president Wally R Mariani said: 'Qantas is committed to investing in products aimed at improving a customer's ability to stay connected inflight.

'Known as an innovative airline always abreast of new technologies, Qantas will be one of the first carriers in the world to offer this service.'

The service would allow passengers to send emails and SMS messages and make voice calls.

The onboard call service is primarily aimed at business passengers and a survey by the airline showed a majority of business travellers would interested in remaining contactable and active while flying, describing it as 'an effective use of time'.
