Bollywood film to boost S Africa tourism

21 Sep 2006

Local officials in Cape Town, South Africa, are hoping that a new Bollywood film will generate cash for the city.

Entitled Cash, in The Mother City, the multi-million rand film is the first Bollywood title to be set in the African country and tourism leaders hope that it will attract more visitors, particularly from India.

The Bollywood film industry is around twice the size of Hollywood and has a vast audience worldwide. The new flick is being produced by Bollywood legend Sohail Maklai, distributed by Metro-Adlabs and stars Ajay Devgan, Esha Deol and Zayed Khan.

Cape Town Routes Unlimited, the Cape Film Commission, and South African Tourism are working to facilitate the filming and promote the best hotspots and scenery in Cape Town and the Western Cape.

Extra spending on accommodation and other services as a result of the filming is expected to reach more than $818,000, while some of those seeing the film are also expected to make the journey to Cape Town.

The recent economic boom in India means that more and more people are taking holidays abroad and many Indians are heavily influenced by the film industry.

Sohail Maklai told reporters at a media conference at the Radisson Hotel in Cape Town that he had chosen Cape Town for the location of his latest film after being impressed by its beauty during a holiday 2 years ago.
