Tourism improves in Tuscany

21 Sep 2006

The tourism industry has started to recover from a recent slump, a new report claims.

The latest figures from the regional tourist studies centre indicate that the area saw tourism increase by 2.6% this summer, compared with summer 2005.

Tourism grew in the seaside resorts (3.6%), the art cities (2.4%), and the countryside (1.2%) between June and August 2006 and regional tourism councillor Anna Rita Bramerini has welcomed the statistics, Agenzia Giornalistica Italia (AGI) online reports.

The regional observatory on tourism states that, based on a sample of 1,204 destinations, Tuscany's market position was stronger during the summer months than it has been for a while, with five per cent more German tourists and a higher number of visitors from eastern Europe.

The study also found that the number of tourists between June and August comprised 59% Italians and 41% foreigners.

According to the Halifax Travel Insurance Holiday 2030 report, published last month, the number of heatwaves experienced by Tuscany is likely to increase dramatically as a result of climate change, with more 'tropical' nights and a sharp increase in the number of dry days each year.
