US relaxes air liquid ban

Passengers flying from US airports will once again be able to take drinks and other liquids on board after government officials relaxed airport security measures.
A ban on liquids and gels was put in place following a suspected bomb plot to blow up transatlantic aircraft mid-flight. Terrorists in Britain had allegedly conspired to detonate liquid explosives on board planes travelling from the UK to America.
But a homeland security department official has now determined that the threat to the US has passed and has allowed passengers to take liquids they purchase in shops inside airport security checkpoints onto planes.
Passengers will also be allowed to take certain items, such as lipstick, moisturiser and other travel-sized toiletries, through security, the official said. Such products must be displayed in clear plastic bags so they can be screened at security checkpoints.
According to the Boston Globe, deputy US homeland security secretary Michael Jackson said that despite the relaxation in security the US government still considers liquid bombs to be a serious threat and has no plans to reduce the current security alert from orange.
