Colorado ski season starts

29 Sep 2006

Early storms have brought snow to the pistes of Silverton in Colorado meaning the area has claimed the first tracks of the season.

Silverton Mountain, which is one of the first resorts to get snow each season, now has around 30ins of snow at 11,600ft and more at higher attitudes.

The official opening of the ski season in Silverton was originally penned in for 23 November, but plans are now believed to be afoot to bring it forward if the cold weather continues as expected.

This year the Colorado resort has opened 164 acres of 'ultra steep terrain', with cliffs and many near-vertical pistes designed for expert skiers.

Durango Mountain Resort spokesperson told The Durango Herald: 'We are all ecstatic. We all love this weather and it is getting us excited for the winter season.

'Some people are already getting their boards out of the closet.'
