Liquid and gel ban to be lifted

The ban on carrying liquids onto aeroplanes is to be lifted by November.
New rules will take effect from late November after EU countries came to a common policy on the problem.
The new policy is being seen as a compromise between the outright ban on liquids and gels taken in the UK and less severe restrictions faced in other countries.
Passengers will be allowed to take bottles of 100ml in size through security checks in clear plastic bags, which will have a maximum size of 1 litre. Solid cosmetics will also be permitted.
This will allow products such as toothpaste, contact lens solution and nail varnish to be taken on board.
The maximum size for carry-on luggage is to be set at 56 cm by 45 cm by 25 cm.
EU commissioner for transport Jacques Barrot said the new rules would 'strike the necessary balance between a tough approach in security, the comfort of passengers and the needs of the industry'.
