Rome's golden palace to reopen

The ruins of Nero's Domus Aurea palace are to be reopened to the public.
Italian authorities initially closed the attraction in December last year because of safety concerns, but the palace, known as the golden house, will be reopened early next year so the public can view the renovations programme in action.
Currently the roof of the palace which was buried by Nero's successors and thus preserved is being water-proofed as heavy rain in 2005 had caused part of the roof to collapse.
Rome's architectural superintendent Angelo Bottini told the Italian news agency ANSA: 'Once the roof is safe from leaking water people can come back in. They'll be able to see the repair work for themselves. We're thinking of putting up a special visitors' route amid the scaffolding.'
Highlights of the Domus Aurea include frescoes showing scenes from myths and the eight-sided Sala Ottagonale where Nero entertained guests with his singing and lyre playing on a rotating floor.
