Eastern Europe top destination

1 Nov 2006

Bulgaria is the most popular up and coming holiday destination according to figures released by online travel agent Opodo.co.uk.

The UK branch of the European travel agent has collated information on bookings made for the upcoming year and Bulgaria has come out on top.

The number of bookings for trips to Sofia has increased by a huge 40% in the last six months, with travel experts putting it down to the country's former inaccessibility.

'2006 has seen a strong rise in travel to eastern European countries since whilst being accessible, they still hold a certain mystique for the traveller,' said UK country manager at Opodo Neil Mott.

Russia is also benefiting from a similar effect and has seen bookings increase by 24%.

Opodo has also seen bookings to Morocco increase impressively with Mr Mott putting this down to the fact that tourists can 'quickly immerse themselves in another culture' while in the country.

As the only European online travel provider that sells holidays in Cuba, Opodo is in a great position to see the country's popularity grow and in the last six months bookings have increased steadily.

The figures also show that Australia, Brazil, India, Dubai, China and South Africa have seen an increase in bookings and the firm expects the popularity of long haul destinations to continue with the introduction of the Airbus A380.

The large aircraft will increase capacity to these destinations and could lead to prices falling.
