No snakes onboard

23 Nov 2006

Airport officials in Manila were called into action when a woman tried to board a flight with 130 reptiles in her luggage.

The woman, from the Philippines, was attempting to get on a flight to Bangkok when the authorities came across the animals, reports Reuters.

In scenes reminiscent of those on view in horror movie Snakes on the Plane, 140 reptiles were discovered, including poisonous cobras.

X-ray machines revealed the animals, which had been concealed in a number of strange ways.

Around 60 snakes were stuffed into water bottles, while dozens of lizards were found with nappies on, as the woman attempted to conceal the smell of their urine.

It is thought that the unnamed lady was smuggling the animals to Thailand as they are believed to be effective aphrodisiacs and good-luck charms.

Staff at the airport in Manila have been on high alert recently after arresting a man last week who tried to smuggle three Siamese crocodiles in from Cambodia.
