Tragedy attracts tourists

27 Nov 2006

The site of a tragic incident is becoming the scene of a grisly form of tourism in the US.

Riegelwood in Delaware was struck by a tornado earlier this year, causing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage, destroying many homes and leading to the death of eight people.

Since that terrible day however, the small town has been attracting visitors who say that curiosity simply got the better of them.

'You see the pictures and hear the stories on television, but you want to see it in person,' visitor Jim Davison told the Associated Press.

Authorities say that some people make a special effort to visit the town, while others will stop as they pass through on their way to another destination.

Although many visitors stop to take photographs, the majority are genuinely interested in and saddened by what they see.

'It's almost unreal,' said Alice Peterson, who took her grandchildren to show them how fortunate they are.

'I feel so sad for the people. My heart and my prayers go out to them,' she added.
