India's Sun Temple to be restored
28 Nov 2006
People taking a holiday in India will soon be able to benefit from seeing the Sun Temple in Orissa restored to its former glory.
Plans have been put in place to revitalise the monument, with costs expected to run up to Rs 13.08 crore (£1.5m), reports the New Kerala.
'The Archaeological Survey of India has entered into a MoU (memorandum of understanding) with the IOC (Indian Oil Corporation) and the Indian Oil Foundation (IOF) for development of visitor facilities at five heritage sites,' said India's minister for tourism and culture Ambika Soni.
'The Sun Temple at Konark is among them,' she revealed.
Those behind the project say that the Sun Temple needs some major work done to it, including the development of a main avenue, an arrival point, development of access roads, the navagraha temple and open-air theatre.
During the same speech in which she revealed the plans for the Sun Temple, Ms Soni also said that plans had been put in place for a number of new eco-tourism sites in Orissa.
